San Telmo

At the advice of all guidebooks and Internet experts, we spent Sunday in San Telmo at the Feria San Telmo. There were vendors selling wares and the market is especially noted for its antiques. We were fortunate to have an overall beautiful day, so we wandered and dug around, finding a few treasures and doing lots of people watching. The market is a draw for tourists, but not in a bad way. I'll go anywhere that sells vintage handbags AND used books.

San Telmo

San Telmo is considered a tango destination neighborhood. We were lucky enough to attend La Esquina Carlos Gardel tango show at the suggestion of ex-pat Laura Chummers. We attended the show solo and it was impressive and had us excited for our tango lesson the next day. It was fun to give it a try and I think we shed about five pounds in water weight since the studio wasn't air conditioned. Our teacher was very nice and I'm kicking myself since I can't remember his name. Both were fun experiences and I recommend trying a little tango.
Laura was recommended by Frommers and turned out to be a bit of a disappointment. We were supposed to meet her at a milonga on Wednesday, but Tom and I ended up arriving in a downpour to a closed milonga. It is apparently only open on Tuesdays and Sundays. We didn't get an apology (or whatever) from Laura, but more of an admonishment for not waiting for her in the rain. In any case, we were disappointed with how the tango experience ended. I was also bummed that someone recommended by Frommer's ended up feeling like a dud.
