San Telmo

San Telmo is considered a tango destination neighborhood. We were lucky enough to attend La Esquina Carlos Gardel tango show at the suggestion of ex-pat Laura Chummers. We attended the show solo and it was impressive and had us excited for our tango lesson the next day. It was fun to give it a try and I think we shed about five pounds in water weight since the studio wasn't air conditioned. Our teacher was very nice and I'm kicking myself since I can't remember his name. Both were fun experiences and I recommend trying a little tango.

Laura was recommended by Frommers and turned out to be a bit of a disappointment. We were supposed to meet her at a milonga on Wednesday, but Tom and I ended up arriving in a downpour to a closed milonga. It is apparently only open on Tuesdays and Sundays. We didn't get an apology (or whatever) from Laura, but more of an admonishment for not waiting for her in the rain. In any case, we were disappointed with how the tango experience ended. I was also bummed that someone recommended by Frommer's ended up feeling like a dud.

The author of Frommer's guide to Buenos Aires was enchanted by Laura without using her services himself, so he had no idea. He is revising his next issue, and I hope he removes her from it.

I've been told through the tango grapevine that she has returned to the USA. It's unfortunate that she didn't provide good service, but that's all you can expect from Laura whose only interest is money.

Thanks for the nice photos of my adopted city.
